BATON ROUGE — A couple was arrested for second-degree cruelty to juveniles on Saturday after a 2-year-old arrived at the hospital suffering from multiple fractures and bruises, according to arrest records.

On Oct. 16, officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department arrived at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital to learn that a 2-year-old brought to the emergency room was suffering from multiple bruises and fractures.

Upon contacting the child's mother, 25-year-old Zoe Wagenhurst, she allegedly told officers that the toddler was injured after falling onto her toddler bed while attempting to tug a toy away from another 2-year-old during a play date. Wagenhurst also told officers that the child's face was bruised by sleeping with her sippy cup in her bed, as well as the child slipping on their dog's urine and hitting her face on the floor, according to arrest records.

Officers said the mother claimed to have no idea about how the hematoma on the victim's skull occurred, as she allegedly discovered it that morning.

While Wagenhurst originally claimed that the toddler never displayed signs of distress, she later allegedly admitted to placing VapoRub and bandages on the child throughout the week after noticing swelling and bruising on the child's arm.

Investigators later contacted the mother of the other child from the playdate, who allegedly said that the toddler's bruising was present when she arrived for the playdate and had no knowledge of the child falling and injuring herself.

Doctors at the hospital confirmed that the child suffered a broken left upper arm, a fractured left leg, bruising on the top of her skull with bleeding under her scalp, and burst blood vessels in both of her eyes.

The mother and child lived along Highland Road with her boyfriend, 21-year-old Christian Griffin, who also cared for the child when Wagenhurst was at work.

Officers later contacted Griffin, who allegedly gave conflicting statements claiming to see the child fall during the alleged tug-of-war, insisting that she didn't cry while the mother claimed they were alerted to the fall due to the child crying. He also claimed that he had no knowledge of the child slipping on urine.

Officers said that Griffin also initially provided responding officers with a false name.

The couple later admitted to seeing the victim's arm swollen and bruised, with Griffin stating that the child was unable to raise her arm above her shoulders, according to arrest records.

Officers said that despite the observations over the past week, neither person sought medical care for the toddler.

Both Wagenhurst and Griffin were arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of second-degree cruelty to juveniles.
