BATON ROUGE — Baton Rouge Community College has launched a new Associate of Science in Health Studies to help students prepare for healthcare careers and admission into nursing and allied health programs, the school announced Thursday.

The program lasts four semesters, requires 62 credit hours and includes courses that align with nursing, diagnostic medical sonography and surgical technology programs.

Roselyn Gilbert, dean of Nursing & Allied Health at BRCC, said the new degree gives students a strong academic foundation and flexibility to pursue nursing, sonography, surgical technology or other health-related careers.

Students waiting for admission into selective programs can switch to the new major and continue making progress toward a degree. The curriculum covers English, mathematics, psychology, biology, health sciences, philosophy, sociology and general education electives.

Graduates can also transfer to four-year schools like Southeastern Louisiana University, Louisiana State University and Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University to continue their studies in health sciences or related fields.
