ST. GEORGE — St. George Mayor Dustin Yates says that the city plans to open a charter school by August 2028.

Yates announced the timeline for a St. George charter school during his State of the City on Wednesday.

In September, WBRZ reported that St. George is looking to partner with charter school operators to open a school within the limits of the East Baton Rouge Parish city.

St. George leadership has been fighting for the creation of an independent St. George school district even before the city's incorporation. In May, a statewide ballot measure to create a St. George school district failed to pass.
