BATON ROUGE - Southern safety Herman Brister III has been named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Week as well as the Aneas Williams HBCU Defensive Back of the Week. The honors come after Brister's dominant performance in Southern's win over Prairie View.

Brister was second on the team in tackles with 10 total, and he also recorded two interceptions. The final one, he returned it for a touchdown to seal the game for Southern.

"The plays that he made are plays that we watch him make consistently in practice. I was just so happy for him," head coach Marshall Faulk said on the SWAC coaches call Monday.

Southern will not play this weekend as they are on a "bye week," but they will use it to get better for their next opponent.

The Jags will go back to Houston to face Texas Southern on Oct. 24.
