Isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms will develop across southeast Louisiana and southwest Mississippi each day through the week. Certainly, the rain is beneficial to lawns and gardens and in nixing out maximum heat. However, be aware of brief delays to the evening commutes as well as after-school activities.

Tropics: two waves to watch, both more than a week away from the U.S.

Tonight & Tomorrow: Quiet, muggy conditions will settle over the Capital Area tonight as any early evening showers fizzle. Lows will be near 77 degrees. Wednesday afternoon may turn out to be the warmest of the workweek. Highs will be near 95 degrees. In response to that warmth, scattered showers and thunderstorms will pop from early afternoon through early evening to the tune of 50% rain coverage.

Up Next: Another, relatively more active day will follow. On Thursday, an upper-level disturbance moving through the atmosphere will stir up an organized cluster of thunderstorms—what we technically call a Mesoscale Convective System (MCS). Expect high rain coverage of 80% with showers and thunderstorms possible as early as morning through the afternoon hours. Some of the thunderstorms could produce brief, damaging wind gusts, along with frequent lightning and downpours. If you work outside or have afternoon outdoor plans on Thursday, keep your phone charged with weather alerts enabled.

Friday and through the weekend, the upper-level ridge of high pressure will expand slightly to cover more of the Capital Area. While a full shutdown of showers and thunderstorms is not expected, the ridge will tend to stunt development. Rain coverage will once again be more isolated in nature and occur later in the afternoon after high temperatures reach the mid 90s.

The Tropics: While the Gulf and Caribbean remain quiet, two tropical waves are being monitored in the Atlantic. Neither poses an immediate threat to the Gulf Coast. A wave several hundred miles northeast of Bermuda has a 40% chance of development over the next 48 hours. Hostile upper-level winds will quickly end its development chances by early Wednesday as it moves harmlessly north-northeastward over open ocean waters.

A second wave south-southeast of the Cabo Verde Islands is showing organization. Environmental conditions favor gradual development, giving it a high 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next day or two as it moves westward across the open Atlantic. Conditions will become less favorable for this system by the weekend.
