GONZALES — Ascension Parish is joining a statewide anti-litter effort by putting up free state-regulated signs in problem areas, high-traffic roads and public boat launches.

The parish said the signs, provided by the state at no cost to local taxpayers, tell people to report littering or illegal dumping to the state's anti-litter hotline at 855-LA-LITTER or 855-525-4883. Reports with details like vehicle make and license plate number go to state enforcement teams, who investigate and issue citations.

Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment said the new signs add accountability without using local tax dollars and send a clear message that illegal dumping and littering will not be tolerated.

Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser said Louisiana spends tens of millions of taxpayer dollars each year on cleanup and that enforcement is a key part of changing behavior.

Parish officials encourage anyone who sees illegal dumping or littering to record details and call the hotline.
