BATON ROUGE — A man was found lying in the road on Bardwell Drive and later determined to have been shot, according to Baton Rouge police.

Police said the victim, who has not been identified, was found around midnight Bardwell Drive near Holloway Avenue. Police initially believed he had been hit by a vehicle, but doctors at the hospital determined he had also been shot.

Officers stayed at the scene for hours as they worked to piece together what happened. The Baton Rouge Police Department has not responded to a request for an interview.

A neighbor said they spoke with an officer at 2 a.m. and were told police believed the man had been run over.

"And when I asked him what happened, the only thing he said was, 'We think the guy got run over.' And that's when I told him, 'No, the guy probably got shot because we heard a shot.'" 

The neighbor described what unfolded after hearing the gunfire.

"When my wife heard the shot, she called me. She came to me and just said, 'I just heard a shot, and it looked like I saw somebody out in the street.'"

The resident said that they consider their neighborhood to be safe, but hearing gunfire is not uncommon. 

"Shooting is so common out here. Nobody calls the police. They don't call the police. They don't call the fire department for it," the neighbor said.

The shooting on Bardwell Drive was one of two shootings Baton Rouge police investigated within 24 hours. The other, a non-fatal shooting, happened near Clayton Street and Beechwood Drive.

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.
