Tangipahoa voters reject plan to change way it funds sheriff's office
AMITE — Tangipahoa Parish voters voted against changing the way it raises money for its sheriff's office. The new way would have raised four times as much money as the current funding plan.
Voters were asked to adopt a three-quarter-cent sales tax that would raise nearly $25 million a year for the agency. Earmarks include school resource officers for all public schools along with funding for additional law enforcement positions and equipment.
In return, the parish would drop a property tax voters renewed in 2020. That proposal, at 10 mills, raises just over $6 million a year.
Also, Tangipahoa Parish voters in Mosquito Abatement District No. 1 approved a 4.98-mill property tax renewal that would raise $3 million a year for the next 10 years. The district is roughly the southern half of Tangipahoa Parish.
