BATON ROUGE — The State Fire Marshal introduced a new mascot to help educate the community about fire safety.

Pelly-Can is a pelican that will be the face of education programs centered around smoke alarms, escape planning and other ways to be safe. The programs will also include materials like activity sheets and social media graphics.

"Everybody knows the Saints mascot. Everybody knows Mike at LSU. So now we have the ability to put out our mascot and put out more in a consistent matter that across the state can be a recognizable figure to recognize risks and hazards in our homes," said Kory Leo, Director of Community Risk Reduction with the State Fire Marshal said.

Pelly-Can's catchphrase is making fire safety soar in Louisiana. The mascot will appear at fire department events, schools and online pretty soon.
