BATON ROUGE — Students packed Fred’s Bar in Tigerland to learn about managing credit as part of the Credit One Bank Credit Tip-Off Tour.

The event focused on helping young adults build healthy money habits, avoid common financial missteps, and better understand how credit scores work. Basketball Hall of Famer and LSU icon Shaquille O’Neal headlined the appearance, sharing his perspective on financial literacy and building personal wealth.

Serving as the tour's "Credit Professor," O’Neal joined Credit One Bank Chief Marketing Officer Michael Coleman for an open panel discussion on making informed financial decisions. James Dumoulin, co-founder of The School of Hard Knocks, hosted the event.

Students were able to ask questions and learn about practical financial fundamentals, including making payments on time, keeping balances low, and understanding how credit scores shape future opportunities like renting apartments and securing auto loans.

“I know everybody here has dreams and aspirations of doing things and owning things you know. You always want to be able to use other people’s money but you got to have your credit. The first thing they’re going to look at when they take your social security number is they’re going to look at that credit if it’s below 700 you’re going to have to wait five or six more years before you start your goal" said O'Neal.

After the financial discussion, O’Neal traded the classroom setting for the DJ booth, performing a live set under his electronic music moniker, DJ Diesel.

The Baton Rouge stop was one of four college campus events on the Credit Tip-Off Tour, which also includes visits to Southern Methodist University, Georgia State University, and Florida Atlantic University.
