Number of flight cancellations climbs as winter storm affects most of the country
BATON ROUGE — Sunday is expected to see a large number of flight cancellations due to the winter storm affecting much of the country.
As of Saturday, more than 12,000 flights have already been cancelled, according to a report by the Associated Press.
ABC reported that American Airlines has cancelled 37% of its total flights, with 85% of flights at LaGuardia Airport in New York being cancelled.
The Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport has cancelled 16 flights so far, including flights from American Airlines, Delta Airlines, and United Airlines.
According to the AP, about 140 million people or more than 40% of the U.S. population, were under a winter storm warning. By midday Saturday, a quarter of an inch of ice was reported in parts of southeastern Oklahoma, eastern Texas and portions of Louisiana.
Around 120,000 power outages were reported due to the winter storm on Saturday, including about 36,000 in Louisiana.
