BATON ROUGE — A man accused of striking a cyclist near Perkins Road in June 2025 has been arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

According to an arrest warrant, the cyclist was riding home from work on his bike along Baywood Avenue near Perkins on June 15 when he was struck from behind by a car. Police later found the cyclist and his bike, which was badly damaged.

The cyclist was taken to the hospital and treated for abrasions to his head, back, arms, legs and hands.

At the scene, police observed a tire track on roadside gravel leading to where the cyclist was struck, which police say indicated that the driver had to "partially leave the roadway on the opposite side of the road in order to hit the victim."

Police eventually found a vehicle with multiple scratches on the front bumper, as well as windshield damage, both of which were consistent with a high-speed collision with a human body on a bike. The vehicle belonged to 40-year-old Derrick Jackson.

It wasn't until Wednesday, more than a year after the crash, that Jackson was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison as a fugitive from the Baton Rouge Police Department. He was charged with hit-and-run driving, aggravated criminal damage to property and attempted second-degree murder.
