LIVINGSTON - The Livingston Parish Council is calling on the attorney general's office and the State Board of Ethics to investigate a leaked check that exposed the parish's banking information.

Discussion at Thursday night's parish council meeting centered on the checks that were featured in a campaign mailer issued by 21st JDC district attorney candidate Sherman Mack.

The ad showed unredacted parish checks including the parish's banking information. The ad took aim at Mack's opponent, Moody Law Firm attorney Brad Cascio, who he claims is a lawyer for the parish and profits off of its litigation.

Earlier this month, Councilwoman Erin Sandefur took to social media, saying she had concerns over payments made to the Moody Law Firm, and asked the parish government for those documents. She said she shared what she was provided with Mack.

Sandefur addressed the matter during Thursday's council meeting.

"First of all, I didn't know that checks were on that thumb drive. I didn't ask for checks. I didn't know they were there. Straight up," Sandefur said during the Oct. 8 council meeting.

During the meeting, Councilman Lonnie Watts brought forth a resolution asking the attorney general's office and the State Board of Ethics to investigate the parish checks being distributed.

"This parish is not making the determination regarding whether any law or ethics provision was violated, but allowing that the agencies with the appropriate jurisdiction and expertise to independently review these circumstances, and determine whether any further action is warranted," Watts said during the meeting.

Sandefur did amend that resolution to ask the AG's office to also investigate all contracts and payments involving Moody Law Firm.

"Government has got to work together; candidates and government have got to work together. If we don't, we will not succeed. The administration has to work with the council, the council has to work with the administration," Councilman Ryan Chavers said.

Chavers says he feels this move will bring transparency to the situation.

"If there was no wrongdoing from either party, then there should be no problem with asking them to do an internal investigation and have internal eyes on it," Chavers said.

The attorney general's office confirmed they have received the request from the Livingston Parish Council to investigate the matter.
