HAMMOND — A Hammond man could face federal charges after he was arrested on gun charges twice within a week, the Hammond Police Department said Thursday.

According to police, officers stopped 19-year-old Dewayne Pines as he was driving in Hammond on March 26. During a search of his car, officers found 146 grams of marijuana and a stolen handgun. Police say the gun was fixed with a machine gun conversion device, commonly called a "switch." Pines was arrested and booked into the Hammond City Jail.

He was later transferred to the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, where he bonded out.

Six days later, on April 1, officers tracked Pines down again "while continuing their investigation into the incident," the police department said. Police say Pines resisted and was briefly handcuffed.

It was then that officers found a loaded handgun in Pines' waistband and another 117 grams of marijuana in his vehicle. He was again arrested and booked into the Hammond City Jail.

The Hammond Police Department said it will pass the investigation along to the U.S. Attorney's Office for potential federal prosecution.
