Sports2-A-Days Preview: Denham Springs Yellow Jackets

BATON ROUGE, LA - Second year head coach Bill Conides called it the second best offseason he's ever been a part of. After a 6-5 campaign in 2017 the chips are all in and the expectations are high rolling into the upcoming season.

"Year two you're always going to be better because the culture is established and the kids know what to expect," said Conides.

Conides will return plenty of play-makers on offense, including all four wide receivers. DJ Williams will be the work horse and number one target for junior quarterback Luke Lunsford.

After some trial and error in his first season calling plays, Conides said he expects the Yellow Jackets offense to be more 50/50 and balanced with the run game.

"In Mississippi it was more get in the shotgun and try to throw it every down and let Brennan do his thing," Conides said. "This is a little bit different, we feel like we play in the best district in Louisiana and you've got to be able to run the football. So, we're certainly doing that and we're still going to throw it a lot. But, if we can be efficient in the run game, we feel good about our chances."

This season the Yellow Jackets will lean on Luke Lunsford to drive the high-powered west coast style offense. While Conides wants to get the most out of the run attack, the bread and butter of this offense will no doubt be relying on the arm of Lunsford to make plays down field.

"He's got the size, he's 6'3" 200 pounds and can throw it," admitted Conides. "He's had a tremendous off-season. He's grown both in his stature and in his ability to play. I can't say enough about the kid, he's got a 4.0 GPA and can flat out play. All these guys believe in him, so I think we have something special at the quarterback position."
