Southern football looks to lean on running back depth

Related Story

BIRMINGHAM - With Southern offensive coordinator Ken Merchant's "Go-Go offense" relying heavily on the run game, it's easy to look at Jags' star running back Trey Holly. However, there are more backs on Southern's roster that are looking to make an impact for the Jags in 2026.

"Mike Franklin has been phenomenal," said Southern head coach Marshall Faulk. "He had a Lisfranc injury. He came back from that. He's been looking phenomenal in practice; I'm looking forward to seeing Mike. I think Mike is a guy with what he does on special teams; some NFL team, they're going to look at him. They're going to give him a shot."

Historically, Merchant's offenses have run the ball at a high volume with a high rate of success. The 2025 Sacramento State Hornets, Merchant's team last season, were second in FCS in rushing yards per game.

Unfortunately, that success isn't expected to carry the Jags through their week one game against Alabama State. Southern is a 19.5-point underdog heading into the game.
