BATON ROUGE — A Baton Rouge Police Department officer shot a man who was threatening people in an apartment complex while holding a rifle Sunday evening, Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse said.

Morse said officers were called to the Jaguar Plaza apartment complex along Harding Boulevard, across the street from Southern University's Baton Rouge campus, shortly before 6 p.m. When officers arrived, the man threatened them with the weapon, Morse said.

"They had to take action to defend their lives and shot him," Morse said.

The chief said the man was taken to a hospital and his injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.

University officials issued a statement an hour after the shooting, saying that the situation was under control and no students were involved.

"At this time there is no known threat to the Southern University campus, and no Southern University students were involved in the incident," the statement read.
