BRG Survivor Series: Grandmother beats cancer twice with faith

Related Story

Baton Rouge — Latonya Rodney discovered a lump in her breast in 2019 that changed her life. She put off visiting a doctor for about four months. When she was finally evaluated, doctors delivered a sobering diagnosis: Stage 2 triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of the disease.

She fought that first battle and won. Then last year, while away on vacation, Rodney noticed a tiny peanut-sized lump. Her cancer had returned 6 years after her first diagnosis.

Rodney sought immediate medical attention, launching straight into evaluation and treatment. In June 2026, as part of her treatment plan to ensure the cancer was fully removed, she underwent a double mastectomy.

Through both grueling journeys, Rodney found strength in her deeply rooted faith. Now a two-time survivor, she uses her second chance at life to ensure no woman has to walk the path alone.

Rodney supports other women who are navigating their own breast cancer diagnoses. She accompanies patients to their doctor appointments, offering a comforting presence and an empathetic ear during some of their scariest moments. For Rodney, it is a way of paying forward the overwhelming love and support she received when she was in the hospital bed.

"Be you. Let your light shine. Don't let it dim, because mine is always shining 365, because I have another chance. I got another chance," Rodney said.

Today, Rodney spends her free time surrounded by family, enjoying moments with her grandkids, listening to music, and participating in church activities. Having faced down breast cancer twice, she says she treats every day as a gift.
