LAPLACE — SWAT officers rescued a driver after his box truck flipped over the Bonnet Carre Spillway into the marsh below, the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office said Thursday.

Deputies responded to a crash near mile marker 210 on the spillway shortly after 11 a.m. on Thursday. When deputies arrived, they found a white box truck had gone over the side of the bridge and landed upright in a marshy area. 

SJSO called in a SWAT unit to rescue the driver, who injured his arm and could not get out of the truck. No one else was in the vehicle. 

Video shared by the sheriff's office shows SWAT officers rappelling down the side of the spillway and pulling the driver from the truck. The driver was taken to a hospital in New Orleans, officials said. 

The crash shut down the two left lanes going eastbound for several hours before reopening shortly before 3:30 p.m. 

SJPSO did not say what caused the crash.
