NEW ROADS — What started as a barbershop has grown into a business offering customers another form of art: tattoos.

Lucky 7’s in New Roads combines barbering with a tattoo studio, giving customers a place to get a fresh haircut or a permanent piece of artwork.

Owner Steve Lynch said adding tattoos was not part of his original business plan. After serving in the Army, he opened the barbershop and eventually added an extra room.

“I was cutting my buddy’s hair in the barracks, and that’s when I realized I could cut hair a little bit,” Lynch said.

Lynch said the shop was originally intended to operate solely as a barbershop, but the additional space created an opportunity to expand.

That space is home to tattoo artist Patrick Riche, who has been making art since he was 7.

Before beginning a tattoo, Riche said preparation is essential. He washes his hands, sanitizes his equipment and prepares his workstation before working with a client.

The process involves more than putting ink on skin. Riche said designing the artwork, applying the stencil, finding the right placement and making sure the customer is happy are all important parts of the experience.

For Riche, tattooing turns his passion into a profession.

“It is very rewarding. It doesn’t even really feel like work,” Riche said.

He said the experience can also offer clients a chance to relax and connect with their tattoo artist, whether they are having a serious conversation or sharing a few laughs.

At Lucky 7’s, each tattoo is different, reflecting the individual stories, ideas and memories customers choose to carry with them.
