BATON ROUGE — One of the oldest homes in Baton Rouge is giving visitors a look at a piece of Louisiana history that dates back nearly a century.

The old governor's mansion was built in 1929 and officially opened in 1930.

Logan Hall, the visitor services coordinator, said the building is closely tied to one of Louisiana's most well-known political figures. "We were built in 1929 and officially opened in 1930 by Huey Long," Hall said. "This is what we call Huey's house or the white House of Louisiana."

Huey Long aspired to be in the White House, so he had his home modeled closely after it. The mansion has nine bedrooms along with a number of other rooms to explore.

The building is also a popular spot for weddings and wedding photos, and visitors can walk around the property on their own. Hall said one of the standout features is the solarium.

"It's an old porch style that's been covered ever since, and it's absolutely beautiful," Hall said, "and people can come here and do tours and learn about the history."

The mansion also welcomes school field trips and other group visits.
