BATON ROUGE — LSU Athletic Director Verge Ausberry is warning that college sports are heading toward a financial cliff if costs are not brought under control.

Ausberry says NIL and revenue sharing are two of the biggest drivers behind the rapidly rising costs. Right now, he says, it costs $40 million to run a football team, $20 million for a basketball team and $10 million for baseball.

He is calling on lawmakers to act before schools like LSU reach a breaking point.

"Where do we stop this? Where do we contain it?" Ausberry said. "That's what we're trying to control and put our hands around all of us because it's not sustainable. The cliff is coming. And by December and we don't have anything in place we're looking at football teams jumping from $50 million dollars to $65 and $70 million dollars."

WBRZ will be in the courtroom tomorrow when a judge could decide whether players fighting for a fifth year of eligibility will get to play for LSU.
