BATON ROUGE - Attorney General Liz Murrill issued a brief in the NCAA case regarding fifth-year eligibility for college athletes.

Murrill filed an amicus brief, which is a legal document submitted by individuals or organizations with an interest in the case. In the brief, Murrill calls the case a "classic bait-and-switch," saying the NCAA told the Class of 2022 they could not play prior to rescinding their decision.

This comes as a Thursday decision will determine whether former NFL players will be granted that fifth year of eligibility.

Murrill argued that the NCAA stripped athletes "of their ability to return to the field," as many players "took the NCAA at its word and moved on from college football."

"The NCAA's ever-changing rules have consequences beyond these individual athletes," Murrill said. "They affect the universities that recruit them, the other student-athletes with whom they compete, and the coaches and administrators responsible for complying with an increasingly complicated set of rules. And those rules can determine who gets a roster spot, who receives a scholarship, and who plays in Death Valley on Saturday, and it forces Louisiana public universities and Louisiana’s student-athletes into a no-win situation."

Murrill goes onto argue that the uncertainty puts Louisiana's public universities in an unfair position, and that clear and consistent rules are necessary going forward.
