DENHAM SPRINGS — Seventh Ward Elementary continues to honor the memory and legacy of a crossing guard who was hit and killed by an alleged drunk driver while working outside a Denham Springs school in April.

Katy Wells was a beloved crossing guard in the community who worked for the school system and sheriff's office for 40 years, helping children safely cross the street.

Wells was working on the road outside of Gray's Creek Elementary the afternoon of April 30 when she was allegedly hit by Darren Goudeau, 64, of Walker. He was arrested for vehicular homicide and DWI.

On Monday, Seventh Ward Elementary, along with the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, revealed a mural created in Wells' honor, as she also taught as a computer lab teacher at the school.

"Over the years, countless students had the opportunity to work with Mrs. Katy in what became known as 'Mrs. Katy’s Lab,'" said Seventh Ward Elementary Principal Laura Dunlap. "Just as Mrs. Katy touched countless lives throughout her years at Seventh Ward Elementary, we hope this mural will forever serve as a reminder of the lasting impact she leaves behind in all of us."
