Deep tropical moisture will continue to pump into the Capital Area, bringing downpours and the possibility of isolated poor-drainage flooding into the weekend. Additionally, lightning could pose a threat of minor delays to any outdoor activities, including football.

No Heat Relief: humid with highs in the low to mid 90s

Tropics: historically quiet

Football Forecasts: Just like last weekend, do not cancel outdoor plans for high school or college football, but be aware of thunderstorms. Friday evening and Saturday will not bring washouts, but lightning could cause the need for brief breaks inside and delays to events. For high school football, showers and thunderstorms will be tapering off with temperatures slipping out of the 80s into the upper 70s. For LSU Football, the day will be partly sunny with temperatures reaching the low 90s. Passing showers and thunderstorms will be possible from late morning through the start of the game, but lots of dry time is also expected. 

A moisture-rich atmosphere will keep feeding these storms. Think of our local air like a fully soaked sponge—it cannot hold any more water, so any storm that develops will drop a lot of rainfall in a short period. Rain rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour could cause isolated street flooding where drainage systems get overwhelmed. Avoid driving through water-covered roads.

Tonight & Tomorrow: Following the typical routine, showers will diminish after sunset. Lows will settle around 74 degrees overnight before the pattern repeats on Saturday. Sun breaking through clouds early will drive highs into the low 90s before showers and thunderstorms develop.  

Up Next: The heavy rain threat will slowly decrease over the weekend. Coverage of showers and thunderstorms will fall off by Sunday and certainly into early next week. The tropical moisture will decrease a bit, making it more difficult for widespread rain and allowing our high temperatures to surge back into the mid-90s by Monday. Paired with lingering humidity, heat index values could top 108 degrees, meaning we may not have had our last heat alerts just yet. However, this is expected to be short-lived, and there are some signs that a couple of fronts could make a run at the region next weekend. It is too early to tell if they will arrive and bring major changes, but a sure sign that we are getting closer to a bigger break in the heat.

The Tropics: The tropics are quiet near the peak of hurricane season. No development is expected anywhere across the Atlantic, Caribbean, or Gulf over the next 7 days. In fact, only two years in modern history (since 1950) have featured no active storms five days on either side of September 10—1992 and 2025. This season will likely mark a third. In addition, no season in modern history has gone past September 11 without the first hurricane developing. That record will belong to 2026.
