PORT ALLEN - The Holy Family Catholic Church has been in West Baton Rouge Parish for 150 years, moving through generations and leaving a lasting impact on the community.

"Now, at that time, the priest actually lived in Lobdell. But as time went on the population moved more from Lobdell to here," pastor Jerry Martin said.

Since then, the church has expanded its imprint on Port Allen, adding more community outreach programs and a school. The growth has touched family generations.

"My grandparents lived here, my parents were married at Holy Family, so they grew up here. My dad went to school there," Elizabeth Schroeder, the church's director of religious education, said.

Now, the church, which has been in Port Allen since 1876, has plans to get the alumni involved in the church community.

"We'll call every couple of months to say, 'Hey, we've got like a school auction fundraiser coming up in October,'" Martin said.
