NEW ROADS — The Pointe Coupee Parish School System has several new projects happening across the athletics department.

"Because we've done a new track and field, we've redone the football field, which comes along with the scoreboard, the little things as well," Superintendent Kim Canezaro said.

Athletics director and head football coach Khalil Thomas says the district is about action, and these new projects show it.

"One hundred percent. I think Miss Kim, when she hired me, and we met, and every time we've talked, she never thinks I'm crazy; no idea is too big. There's nothing that we're not willing to do to create new opportunities," Thomas said.

They've also invested money into Star Academy. It is a classroom where students learn on the computer.

"It is hands-on learning; it's like a school within a school. It is to increase attendance, reduce your referrals and discipline, and improve grades," Canezaro said.

They first launched Star Academy on the Rougon Campus last year; it did so well that they brought it to Livonia.

"We got experiments, and I love us doing experiments, and it's better than last year because we were in books, straight books, just writing," Bryionna Francois, a Livonia student, said.

The superintendent says it shows they are invested in all areas for all students.

"So we are making an investment in where the students spend the day, their seven hours a day with us and then their extracurricular athletics because both are so important," Canezaro said.
