After the past week's episode in New England, blizzards may still be a threat with 13 days remaining in Winter . According to "Acts of God, The Old Farmer's Almanac" the biggest blizzard in southern New England's history hit Boston and the coast on February 6, 1978, known as the “Blizzard of ’78.”.. For the first time in 106 years, the Boston Globe was unable to deliver.  Traffic was a standstill for five days with 27 inches of snow. The 100-year storm in Minnesota on January 10, 1975 posted wind chill values at -80 with two feet of snow and 35 fatalities. For seven weeks a savage series of blizzards hit the Great Plains on January 2, 1949.  Wind speeds of 80 mph drove snow into massive drifts with temperatures as low as -50 degrees. Other weather notes include this date in 1954 when Florida received its greatest snowfall as four inches whitened Milton and two inches covered Pensacola.  On March 5, 1997, a swath of hail, five miles wide and a foot deep, stretched from McLain, Mississippi to Leakesville that was still visible the following day.  On March 4, 1841, President William Henry Harrison took the oath of office on a cloudy, windy, day and a temperature of 48 degrees. After a lengthy speech he took a carriage ride from the Capitol Building without a hat or overcoat. The following days he suffered a cold that escalated into pneumonia and he died one month later.
